France 5 broadcasts this Friday evening at 9 p.m. the documentary Where is ET gone? – Childhood according to Spielberg, which looks back on the cultural phenomenon around the film released in 1982. Forty years later, what remains of this feature film on the transition to adulthood, friendship and the preservation of childhood in each of us?
This is the issue chosen by the film directed by Basile Roze and Emilie Valentin, which presents a number of archive images, making of ET the extraterrestrial, and reveals crisp anecdotes. Among them, we find the one according to which the alien in Spielberg’s film was created based on… a cat!

Italian artist Carlo Rambaldi, chosen for this work, gave birth to the creature by taking inspiration from the family cat, Kika. It was from his face that he drew what was to become the face of ET A face that marked several generations of spectators.
Moreover, under his skin, ET is an extremely innovative animatronic for the time. Again created by Carlo Rambaldi, it is animated by 13 people hidden on the side of the film set so that the alien can react, move his mouth and his limbs in the same plane as the children. Her voice is provided (uncredited) by radio soap actress Pat Welsh.
