A baby found all alone in a trash room, his mother taken into police custody

During the night of Saturday March 23 to Sunday March 24, an infant was found in the trash room of a building in Saint-Etienne (Loire). It was neighbors who made this astonishing discovery after hearing a baby crying.

They did not expect to make this terrible discovery. During the night of this Saturday March 23 to Sunday March 24, around 4:30 a.m., the residents of a building located in Saint-Étienne, in the Loire, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, heard howls strongly resembling baby crying. As they left their home, guided at first by the cries, they were amazed to see traces of blood.

Following these traces, they went to the ground, in the corridor leading to the cellars, and more precisely to the trash room of the building. There, they came face to face with… a newborn, all alone in this storage room. Alerted by his cries and the presence of blood, which testify to the very recent birth of the child, the neighbors immediately called emergency services.

Umbelical cord, hypothermia and traces of blood: what happened to the baby?

The Loire departmental fire and rescue service (SDIS) then sent a Loire Samu team to the scene, reveal Progress. One of the team’s doctors quickly took care of the infant, who still had his umbilical cord and was in a state of hypothermia. Despite everything, he was in good health and his life was not in danger, according to France Blue.

The baby was transported to the Saint-Etienne university hospital, where he was still this Sunday, March 24. An investigation into “attempted homicide” was opened by the police, who also went to the scene. “If no one had intervened quickly as was the case, the baby might not have survived”, justified the police.

The mother taken into custody

According to the first elements of the investigation, the mother of the child, a young woman aged 20 also living in this building in Saint-Étienne, would have denied pregnancy. She would have given birth alone, in her bathroom, before putting the newborn in the garbage room.

The police found the young woman by following the drops of blood in the common areas, from the premises to her apartment. They rang the doorbell before the mother, who was at home, opened the door. She was also hospitalized at the city’s North Hospital. She was placed in police custody and should be interviewed by investigators as soon as her state of health allows her to undergo questioning.
