a big free film without even being a subscriber, never seen before!

Surprise ! Netflix offers a free nugget to everyone, without the need for any subscription. An acclaimed film that is in the running for the 2024 Oscars.

Netflix is creating an event this week with the release of the live-action series Avatar: The Last Airbender. An adaptation that seems to please fans of the original material given the first positive reviews. The TV show has everything to be a hit, like this film which may have gone under the radar and yet has been on the platform for several months. To give it visibility, the firm with the red N decided to offer it without any compensation.

A 100% free Netflix movie

With the various price increases in recent weeks, we cannot say that Netflix is generally generous. Certainly, the SVOD giant provides content very regularly, for which subscribers pay every month, but gifts are not really that. Except today with the release online, for free, of a feature film which was narrowly saved and which is a hit. The animated film Nimona is accessible to everyone directly on YouTube. So there is no need for a subscription. If you’re afraid of YouTube compression or something else, it’s also on Netflix, but there you obviously have to pay.

What is Nimona? This is the adaptation of a sci-fi comic released in 2012. “ In a futuristic medieval world, a knight is accused of a crime he did not commit. The only person who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona, a mischievous teenager who just might be the shapeshifting monster he’s sworn to destroy.” (via Netflix). Thanks to her shapeshifting ability, the teenager can transform into many different creatures such as a bear, a bird, a monkey or even a whale. Nimona deals with an unlikely friendship with this wrongly accused knight, but above all with the need to accept oneself and others.

Nimona also addresses questions of identity, which could perhaps have precipitated her downfall. Originally, the project was in the hands of Blue Sky Studios (Ice Age), a Fox studio. But after the merger with Disney, the big-eared firm, which disagreed with some of the themes, canceled everything. Ultimately, it was the independent company Annapurna Pictures that saved Nimona, but also Netflix by adding it to its catalog. And Disney risks biting its fingers because it’s a real hit.

It’s one of the best animated films of recent years based on Rotten Tomatoes returns. It scores 93% with 100 professional reviews, and 91% with over 2,500 viewer reviews. And its popularity could explode again. Next March, the film from Annapurna Pictures and Netflix will travel to the Dolby Theater on Hollywood Boulevard for the evening of the 2024 Oscars. And it will not be there to make up the numbers since it is nominated in the “Best Motion Picture” category. ‘animation’ with The Boy and the Heron, Elementary, My Robot Friend and Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse.

We will see if the feature film manages to beat its fierce competitors or not, but in any case, it seems to deserve its place if only for its visuals. While waiting for the verdict in a few weeks, you can watch Nimona for free on YouTube until February 26 only. After that, you will have no choice but to subscribe to Netflix.
