(AOF) – The bill “aimed at remedying imbalances in the rental market in tight areas” is being examined in committee at the French National Assembly from this Tuesday. It aims in particular to “fight against the phenomena of eviction of permanent residents from tense areas” by promoting the placing on the market of housing intended for medium and long-term rental, and to limit “conflicts of use between rental residential and tourist rental.
The text wants to encourage “the establishment of main residences in tense areas” by expanding the regulatory powers of local elected officials and by removing the tax advantage granted to classified tourist accommodation.
Several studies published by Airbnb in the 2010s claimed that France was its second largest market after the United States. A 2021 university study, controversial because it was based on “data scrapping”, claimed that it still was.
The examination of this text comes a week after Canada in turn introduced measures limiting tax deductions on short-term rentals on services such as Airbnb, joining many states eager to remedy their shortage of rental housing .
