A child expelled from a carousel in an amusement park in Antibes: “It was horror”

In Antibes, a six-year-old child was expelled from a running merry-go-round. Traumatized, his family recounts the drama and calls for vigilance.

Unfortunately, carousel accidents are not that rare. Last July, several people found themselves upside down for several hours in a broken carousel. If there were no victims, this is not the case with this carousel accident which occurred at Luna Park, which claimed the life of this 17-year-old boy. And this Monday, August 21, a new merry-go-round accident has occurred at Antibes. Johanna Haddad, a resident of Juan-les-pins went to Antibes Land with his brother and his family, who live in the Paris region.

The 4 children, aged 5, 6, 7 and 9 years old therefore boarded a merry-go-round, without any mistrust. “We know well, we love the rides, we come very regularly”, explains Johanna Haddad at the microphone of France 3. Before adding: “I was confident, I didn’t choose the so-called high-sensation rides, I thought it was for the little ones”. Once seated in the carousel Rock Island, adults notice that something is wrong.

The 6-year-old child falls from the running carousel

Indeed, the adults notice that the merry-go-round is excessively fast. “When the merry-go-round started, we thought it was going very fast, I asked the manager if he could slow down, but he did not understand well (he is Italian)”, says Johanna Haddad. And the family had the hollow nose since the 6-year-old fell off the merry-go-round.By the time he intervenes, the little one has fallen. It was horror, we were terrified.” A drama which, fortunately, ends well because the little one is still alive! Indeed, he was immediately taken care of by the firefighters and taken to the Lenval emergency room. The little boy spent a night under observation and got away with it. only a few bruises.

But if he is almost unscathed physically, it is far from being the case psychologically. After this traumatic event, the whole family is still in shock and especially very angry with the people in charge of the attraction. “Since Monday, I can’t sleep anymore, my nephew has nightmares, my daughter too, I don’t even talk to you about it”, laments the little boy’s aunt. “Do you realize that I let my children ride in an attraction without thinking for a single second that it’s dangerous, no one warns us or checks anything. I blame myself for having trusted and I feel guilty today. In the other rides, there are recommendations: prohibited for children under six, at least four feet tall, obligation to accompany… But nothing there… When I saw it was open again the next day, I was outraged. We were lucky this time, but next time there will be a death or serious injury…”, warns Johanna Haddad.

An opinion not really shared by Nelson Petit, the director of the park. The latter entrusted to France 3 that “the attraction has been validated by an approved company which controls everything”. He adds : “For my part (as director) I checked the signage and since then I have had it added to make it even more visible. For us, safety is essential, we checked everything.”
