A day at the post office – deliverer: “It’s really hard-earned money”

The Post is often criticized prematurely. But what the deliverers are doing and what gigantic quantities they are confronted with, the “Krone” found out from a local inspection.

Thursday, 6 a.m., in the Inzersdorf parcel center in the 23rd district of Vienna. While most Viennese are still slumbering comfortably in bed, it is already busy here. And despite the early hour and the low temperatures, the mood is great. Friedrich Graf is the head of the delivery base. “Today we have around 28,000 parcels that are delivered to households by 170 delivery agents,” he says. A few years ago, this number would have been utopian. Parcels arrive around the clock In the hall, the parcel conveying and sorting belts are currently standing still. “They run from around 9 a.m. until 5 a.m. the next morning,” explains the manager. The trucks are constantly bringing parcels. However, since the deliverers have to fill their Postbuses and space is required for this, the sorting system needs a “compulsory break”. Christian Pokorny is someone who is currently preparing everything for his delivery tour. The 49-year-old has been with Swiss Post for 26 years. This morning it takes him about an hour and a half to put the 180 parcels in his car that he will deliver in his district in the 10th district. Office wouldn’t be for me. But it’s hard earned money, ”says Pokorny. And it’s getting harder and harder. Because people now order everything on the Internet. “In lockdown, I had to deliver huge hanging chairs. Now I feel like a furniture packer, ”he says. And indeed: the packages are getting bigger and bigger: bicycles, scratching posts, furniture. “We used to have small cars, that would no longer be possible today,” says Graf. Personal service And then the tour begins. We leave the parcel center and drive into Pokorny’s delivery area. He’s been doing the same tour for years, knows his customers and even has the cell phone number of many of them. “A lady is handicapped and has a domestic help. Before I come, I figure out when it suits her, ”describes Pokorny. Is there still such a service? “Yes, that’s good for the customers, us deliverers and for the company.” And how good that is, we find out right away at the first stop. Brigitte B. takes her package and is only full of praise for “her delivery person”: “He is the best. When he is on vacation, we are sad, ”she enthuses. Daily overtime, but the deliverer really deserves the vacation. The official service is actually from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Due to the gigantic parcel volumes, however, overtime is incurred every day. “It’s really draining,” he says and rings the bell with a package at the next door.
