A deaf and dumb child miraculously recovered after falling into a huge well

A story that ends well. This Friday, June 10, Rahul Sahu, a 10-year-old deaf mute boy, is fell into a well 24 meters deep, while playing in the backyard of his home in the central state of Chhattisgarh in India. In an attempt to save it, rescuers used earth-moving machinery and cranes which helped dig a tunnel next to the well, with help from the military and members of India’s disaster response agency .

During the operation, a camera was used to monitor the boy’s condition and movements, Janjgir district police chief Vijay Agrawal told AFP earlier today. But bad weather and the presence of very hard rocks made the drilling operation very difficult and delayed the rescue. Especially since it was particularly complicated to communicate with the child. “As the boy cannot speak or hear, we have a greater challenge ahead.”, added the police chief. To ensure that Rahul Sahu stays healthy, an oxygen hose had reached him to supply him with fresh air.

The child “rushed to a hospital”

Jeetendra Shukla, the head of the local administration, indicated that Rahul Sahu “is alive but weakened and was “rushed to hospital” in the neighboring district. “A snake was spotted in the well, but the boy showed exemplary courageremaining calm during the operation”added the latter.

Wells in Indian farming villages are frequent sites of fatal accidents involving young children. In 2019, the northern state of Punjab, a two-year-old child died in a well, after four days of unsuccessful attempts to save him. The same year, a one-and-a-half-year-old child was rescued in the neighboring state of Haryana, after being stuck for two days in one of these wells.
