A desire to undertake on the rise among the French, according to Bpifrance

Business manager, project leader, former boss: in 2023, nearly a third of French people (32%) are part of an “entrepreneurial dynamic”, a percentage up two points compared to 2021, according to a Ifop study for Bpifrance published Thursday.

A third of French people are engaged in an entrepreneurial dynamic in 2023, despite a deterioration in the economic situation in recent years, congratulates Bepifrance in a press release accompanying the study. Among these 32% of respondents with an entrepreneurial appetite, the public bank brings together four profiles: business leaders, former business leaders, people who have taken steps to create a business (project leaders) and intentionists, who plan to one day create their own company.

A particularly strong desire among those under 30

The progression observed between 2021 and 2023 is mainly explained by the increase in the percentage of people who declare themselves to be managers and former business leaders in the French population (+4 points over two years). The number of project leaders is also growing, but more modestly (+2 points). Among those under 30, nearly six out of ten people (58%) are part of an entrepreneurial dynamic, a percentage increasing by seven points in two years.

For the specialist in business creation at Bpifrance Laurence Tassone, young people are the main actors in the entrepreneurial dynamic. Conversely, only 26% of women declare themselves to be (former) business managers, project leaders or intentionalists, compared to 37% of men.

In the game of international comparisons, the Anglo-Saxon countries (Great Britain, United States) and Northern Europe undoubtedly remain more entrepreneurial, but France is gradually catching up, commented the general director of Bpifrance Nicolas Dufourcq to the press. Director of studies at Bpifrance, Philippe Mutricy assured him that if we relate the number of business creations to the stock of businesses (already existing, Editor’s note), France is first or second in the European Union.

But as our stock of companies is a little smaller than in other countries, this explains this extremely favorable rate, he immediately qualified. According to INSEE, for the second consecutive year, more than 1 million businesses were created in France in 2022. The National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies counted a total of 4.2 million businesses in France. end of 2020. The Bpifrance survey was conducted by self-administered online questionnaire from June 15 to 30, 2023, among a representative sample of 5,011 people.
