According to’WHO (World Health Organization), the majority of the population consumes between 9 to 12 grams of salt per day. This is much more than the recommended amount which is between 4 and 5 grams. If salt is necessary for the body, excessive consumption is dangerous for health. In fact, eating too much salt promotes high blood pressure and therefore increases cardiovascular risks. But that’s not all. Another risk is osteoporosis, or the loss of bone mass making the skeleton more fragile.

Unfortunately, salt is present in many everyday foods. A true flavor enhancer, salt is hidden almost everywhere, especially in industrial products, even the sweet ones! Hunting for salt can therefore become a real headache, especially if you suffer from hypertension and watch your daily intake. How do you know if you are consuming too much salt per day?

As a reminder, Doctor Jean-Michel Cohen is the author of the work Knowing how to eat: the food guide. True nutrition expert, the doctor also gives his advice for eating well on his Instagram account. In a video published at the beginning of September, the doctor first reminds that the WHO recommends not consuming more than 5 grams of salt per day. However, France is more tolerant and pushes the slider up to 6 to 8 grams.

But how do we count the number of grams of salt we consume per day? In fact, the doctor explains that seasoning salt only represents 25% of our daily ration. And for good reason, salt is present in many foods, such as smoked products, cold meats, canned soups, cheese, but also in the bread. It therefore becomes complicated, not only to limit our salt intake but above all to be clear about our consumption. Thus, Doctor Jean-Michel Cohen explains that: “Eating salty ultimately means overusing industrial products and using too much seasoning salt.” If you want to reduce your daily salt intake, you must therefore avoid industrial products and table salt. Instead, promote herbs and spices to season your meals.
