A fake Ledger Live app managed to insert itself into the Microsoft Store and steal a tidy sum before being removed.

The French Ledger is known for its physical wallet which allows you to keep your cryptocurrencies safely away from the internet. And to manage its assets, Ledger also provides a Ledger Live application, thanks to which it is normally possible to connect securely to the crypto environment. But that’s obviously only if you download the right application, and not a counterfeit created by pirates!

Nearly $770,000 stolen

To make transactions from your Ledger wallet, it is best to have the Ledger Live application. An essential tool, well spotted by pirates, who produced a counterfeit and then put it online on the Microsoft Store application store. Which allowed them to raise a nice sum.

Indeed, even if the maneuver was quickly flushed out by Blockchain specialist ZachXBT, the application remained on the store long enough to amass a nice haul. According to the same source, a total of more than 768,000 dollars, or approximately 720,000 euros, were stolen by the pirates.

Bad advertising for the Microsoft Store?

An unfortunate story which should serve as a reminder of the great caution to be adopted in the very dangerous world of cryptocurrencies. So, those who acquire a Ledger wallet must download the Ledger Live application from the only official Ledger website. A web address is even directly specified in the box in which said wallet arrives.

But if the carelessness of certain Internet users is the basis of the success of this scam, we can also be surprised by the thoughtlessness of the Microsoft Store teams, who let such an application slip through. We know that cryptocurrencies are one of the areas most attacked by hackers on the internet, requiring a particularly rigorous validation process. Was Ledger contacted by Microsoft before putting this app online?
