In the United States, a hiking family of four adults and two children was rescued thanks to satellite SOS function of the’iPhone. This is not the first time that lives have been saved through Apple brand devices.
Satellite SOS was deployed on Apple smartphones in 2022, with the release of the iPhone 14. It allows the owner of the device to request help without any cellular or Wi-Fi coverage, in simultaneously pressing the lock and volume buttons on it. The iPhone is then connected to orbiting satellites, which relay messages and location to nearby responders as well as emergency contacts.
Distress signal at 7:30 p.m.
This feature saved a hiking family in trouble during a forest walk near Mount Hood in Oregon. At high altitudes and in extreme weather conditions due to heavy snowfall, individuals were no longer able to find their way back.
As night fell, one of the family members with an iPhone activated the satellite SOS function to call for help. The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office, where the hiking trail is located, received the distress signal at 7:30 p.m. Due to worsening weather conditions, the family was advised to take shelter at place while rescuers tried to reach him.
Although ground teams were equipped with all-terrain vehicles, it took them several hours to reach the group. The family was found at 6 a.m., freezing, wet and dehydrated, but unharmed. A helicopter rescue attempt failed due to weather. Ultimately, it was a snowmobile team that was able to reach the victims, bringing them back to safety 24 hours after the first SOS.
Several lives saved
Satellite SOS has already saved lives in several cases. Last August, a hiker and her dog trapped by a flood were rescued in a Utah canyon after the function was activated. Earlier this year, a Delaware student was saved from carbon monoxide poisoning thanks to a last-minute use of the Emergency SOS feature on her Apple Watch.
The connected watch can prove valuable in other critical cases. In June 2023, the device also detected a heart problem caused by a pulmonary embolism in a 29-year-old American woman.
