A man, who thought he had won 1 million euros on a sports betting site, filed a complaint against the latter, who canceled his winnings for dubious reasons. The police took up the matter.
While he thought he had just experienced the happiest day of his life, a short-lived millionaire saw his winnings canceled by the famous Betway platform in Catalonia. The “not so lucky” winner took home the stake, 1.3 million euros to be exact. The site, which cites a breakdown to justify itself, is now in the sights of the local police, who fear a bad move.
Man saw his status go from “winner” to “canceled” on the sports betting site
Main sponsor of the famous football club West Ham United, Betway continues to operate in countries such as the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, Belgium and Spain, after having stopped operating in France since March 31, 2023, at the time for insufficient economic results.
Across the border in Spain, a man thought he had hit the jackpot. With a gain amounting to 1.3 million euros after having guessed the result of 18 matches on November 4, he said to himself that nothing would ever be the same again.
This was without counting on the Trafalgar coup from Betway! Just a few minutes after seeing his win, the site changed its status from “winning” to “canceled”. The Catalan, who fortunately took the trouble to take a screenshot, then decided to file a complaint against the sports betting company, to recover his dues.

Betclic has succeeded in meeting an important challenge, that of opening up the sometimes opaque world of sports betting to as many people as possible, by offering a successful application that is very pleasant to use. The only downside: the odds, which tend to be slightly lower than the competition.

For Betway, it is a “breakdown”, for the police, there may have been malicious action
So how does Betway justify this hitch? According to the police, who delivered their first conclusions, the betting site potentially acted maliciously. More precisely, and above all more worrying, the state of the bets would have been modified by computer, switching the status of the winner to that of the loser.
To the Mossos d’Esquadra, the autonomous police of Catalonia, Betway explains having suffered a breakdown. This would have caused cascading errors of “ several online betting products ”, including incorrect lines, odds or handicaps. The company was thus forced to temporarily suspend its gaming services.
The irony is that the very unfortunate winner had also won other bets that day, including one for more than 10,000 euros, which was also canceled. Police must now determine whether the punter should get his money or whether Betway is telling the truth.
