AMD seems to want to fire any wood with its new generation of processors for laptop.

While we talk a lot about processors desktop, you should know that the laptop market occupies an increasingly important place. No wonder AMD is pampering potential buyers.

Dragon Range: Raphael for mobiles

In fact, with Zen 4 expected this fall, AMD has decided to offer two ranges of laptop quite different. Thus will come Dragon Range, which we see as a “reduced” version of the Raphael CPUs for desktop PCs.

Undoubtedly designed to offer an answer to Intel Alder Lake-HX, Dragon Range CPUs are above all designed for “demanding players” and they will be associated with a dedicated graphics card.

The most powerful of the range, the Ryzen 9 7980HX, will integrate 16 cores, more than any other AMD mobile processor. A 7900HX with 12 cores as well as a 7800HX (8 cores) and a 7600HX (6 cores) are also in AMD’s plans.

It should however be noted that AMD has reviewed the graphics. This is present, but equipped with only two calculation units in RDNA 2, it should only be seen as a backup solution.

Phoenix: less beefy CPU, but RDNA 3

In another register, AMD is therefore preparing the Phoenix range which is distinguished by a significantly less muscular CPU part for a more contained TDP than on Dragon Range.

We are talking about 35 to 45 Watts here and the number of cores is therefore halved on the beefiest model: the 7980HS has to make do with 8 cores / 16 threads, such as the 7900HS and 7800HS. The 7600HS is at the level of the 7600HX (6 cores / 12 threads).

More importantly, Phoenix CPUs shouldn’t come with a dedicated graphics solution. They actually integrate a more ambitious GPU part with a maximum of 12 calculation units (double the Dragon Range), or 1,536 stream processors.

Rumors had specified that the Phoenix would compete with the GeForce RTX 3060 Max-Q. These 12 RDNA 3 units seem to confirm it. Note that the maximum frequency of 3 GHz should allow a gross power of 9.2 TFLOPs to be reached.
