The Samsung 77S95C, the manufacturer’s largest QD-Oled TV, could be joined by an 83-inch model with a WOLED panel from LG Display. A first.
Stalled in 2022, discussions between Samsung and LG Display resumed last April and have obviously succeeded since, according to Business KoreaSamsung should unveil its first TV equipped with an 83-inch Oled panel made in LG Display during IFA 2023. The South Korean company has filed the reference KQ83SC90A with the National Radio Research Institute of South Korea, an essential step before marketing. This new model refers to an Oled version equipped with an 83-inch panel only available from LG Display for the moment.
As a reminder, the WOLED panels produced by LG Display use a structure comprising four sub-pixels (white, red, green and blue), while the QD-Oled panels manufactured by Samsung Display are satisfied with three sub-pixels. LG Display panels are less expensive to produce and available in many sizes (from 42 to 97 inches). On the other hand, QD-Oled panels remain more expensive to produce and, above all, Samsung Display cannot increase production when demand is strong. Currently, Samsung offers two models of QD-Oled televisions, the S90C and S95C, available in 55, 65 and 77 inch versions.
It remains to be seen how Samsung will manage the different technologies within the same range. The 55, 65 and 77-inch models will be equipped with a QD-Oled panel, while the large 83-inch Oled TV should make do with a slightly less bright Oled (WOLED) panel, since the impressive Oled Meta technology (micro-lenses) of the LG 65G3 is not available on this diagonal. Samsung would not be the first to offer Oled panels from both manufacturers, Sony using Oled LG Display panels for its entry-level models (Bravia A80L), as well as QD-Oled panels from Samsung Display on its excellent A95K — and soon on the Bravia A95L. In any case, this opens the door to Oled LG Display panels at Samsung, which should bring competition.
