A hacker has put up for sale the data, which he claims to have recovered from the Chinese authorities, of more than a billion Chinese citizens. This could be one of the biggest data breaches in history.
This could be one of the biggest data breaches in history. A hacker claimed to have obtained, by attacking the servers of the Shanghai police, the personal data of a billion Chinese citizens. The hacker, responding to the pseudonym ChinaDan, published the information on the hacker forum Breach Forums (Breached.to), where he is selling the archive of 23 terabytes (TB) of data for 10 bitcoins.
“The databases contain information on one billion Chinese national residents and several billion pieces of information, including: name, address, place of birth, national identification number, mobile phone number, and other sensitive details”says the hacker in his message.
For the moment, no one seems able to verify these allegations, and to confirm whether or not it is a real mine of information. It is not uncommon for some sales, seemingly impressive, to end up being quite minimal in their implications, depending on the data the archives contain.
