A pipe break at Châtelet-Les Halles station damaged a technical signaling room, leading to an interruption of RER A, B and D traffic in the heart of Paris throughout the afternoon on Thursday, RATP announced.
Crossing Paris was made impossible due to this incident which occurred at 12:15 p.m. for these three RER lines, including the busiest in the network, the A, with 1.4 million passengers per day.
Traffic was able to resume from 4:50 p.m. on line A but remained very disrupted. For the RER B, the second busiest line with nearly a million daily users, the resumption was not planned before 7:30 p.m.
For the RER D, operated by SNCF and which transports 660,000 passengers per day, no resumption was planned before 8:00 p.m.
RER circulation between their termini and Paris, which they cannot cross, is also disrupted.
“Seventy agents were deployed as reinforcements to inform and direct travelers to alternative routes,” assured the RATP. Lines 1 and 14 have also been reinforced to compensate for the absence of RER during rush hour.
“The leak was quickly repaired by the technical teams” and “pumps were sent to evacuate the water which had flooded the premises”, according to the RATP.
Around thirty agents were urgently dispatched “to put the electrical installations back into service safely as quickly as possible”, added the public company, apologizing to users.
