The cinema being a collective sport, it is essential to know how to surround yourself. This is what Philippe Lioret does not fail to do, entrusting a young talent, William Shakespeare, with the script for his new film. This Romeo and Juliet of the present times – coming after many others and not the least – however has the advantage of a real freshness, like the upset young couple, and even more of its luminous interpreters, which is at the heart of its plot. . It doesn’t take them long, at 16, to fall in love with each other in an irrepressible way, with this mixture of candor and ardor specific to this age. At the same time as their meeting, Tarek, Nora’s brother, a handler in the town’s hypermarket, is accused by one of the store’s executives of stealing a bottle of a grand cru, a wrongdoing which he vigorously denies by insulting said executive, which prompted the director of the establishment to dismiss him without further ado.
From this unfortunate incident – in which emerges a feeling of expeditious justice, even of ethnic prejudice – will be born a resentment that will tragically poison the beautiful budding relationship between Nora and Léo. Because, if Tarek is Nora’s brother, Franck, the director of the hypermarket, is Leo’s father. And all of this will naturally come to light. The hitch, in this respect, could pass for contingent as one progresses in the plot, so much the way in which Philippe Lioret portrays the protagonists leaves little doubt about the outbreak of the conflict which will crush them. Tarek is indeed a flayed alive but also a troublemaker as violent as lost. As for his father, an immigrant worker confined to public housing, whose feeling of pride is entirely focused on domestic guardianship, he submits the whole household to a law that is none other than his own.
Mutual contempt
On the side of the Cavani, which we can assume that they also experienced the horrors of immigration, reigns, around the villa with swimming pool, the master plan of social ascent, not to say careerism, with the consequent anguish of falling from the bourgeois elevation that one has won by sheer force. The social contempt is clear. Racism, underlying, unexpressed, is possibly a bonus. It goes without saying that the reciprocal ignorance and contempt that these circles devote to each other are just waiting for a spark to turn into hatred.
