Jewelry at -99.9% reduction: a Mexican claimed to have won a showdown with Cartier after purchasing earrings for $28 instead of $28,000 due to an error by the jewelry giant luxury, and a decision in its favor from a consumer defense organization.

The Office of the Federal Consumer Ombudsman (Profeco), to which the customer had brought the case, decided the dispute in favor of the buyer by ordering the brand to deliver the earrings, Mexican media reported and the interested party, identified as @LordeDandy on the social network

The man, a doctor named Rogelio Villarreal according to the local press, had purchased in December on the Instagram platform a pair of earrings put on sale by Cartier at a ridiculous price.

Obviously being a pricing error, the jeweler had refused to recognize the purchase and deliver them to him, but had refunded his order and offered him a bottle of champagne and a case for his passport, according to a letter of the company distributed by the client.

Mr. Villarreal, however, stood his ground and contacted the federal consumer protection agency. According to the Mexican press, the brand’s representatives did not appear at the conciliation hearings.

“War is over. Cartier is executing,” Mr. Villarreal published on X on Tuesday, where he chronicled his quarrel with the luxury giant in a sarcastic tone.

After four months of standoff, the customer finally confirmed on Friday that he had received the earrings, publishing on X the photo of two small boxes in a box bearing the logo of the luxury company.

Right-wing senator Lilly Téllez accused the lucky customer of being “dishonest”.

“I don’t know, I would have these earrings appraised, the brand had the time to have a pair of much lower quality pendants made,” notes another user on X.

“Obviously, I’m going to have them examined,” replied @LordeDandy. “Besides, I don’t think the brand wants to take this risk.”
