a midwife warns about this innocuous gesture which can be very dangerous

A midwife has alerted breastfeeding mums to a rather widespread practice. A necessary warning given the danger that this practice can represent.

It’s World Breastfeeding Week from August 1, 2023 to August 7, and it deserves to be highlighted for a full week! Mothers breastfeed their children all year round, but there are still many (unbearable) scandals surrounding this practice. Every year, women are kicked out of public places for breastfeeding, they face derogatory remarks so let’s remember: there is nothing more natural! Moreover, in France, no law prohibits a mother from breastfeeding her child in a public space.

If breastfeeding is a pure moment of sharing between the mother and her baby, there are still many points of vigilance to take into account. The mother must not consume alcohol when breastfeeding and must be vigilant about her meals, some babies may be intolerant to foods. But a midwife warned of another habit that can be dangerous while breastfeeding: wear a bra. Nothing alarming at first glance and yet, the specialist explains where the danger can come from…

A habit that can become dangerous if you don’t know it

It was Lucy Webber, midwife and lactation consultant, who explained the points to watch out for when wearing a bra while breastfeeding. In collaboration with the lingerie experts of the Next brand, she explained: “It’s important to keep in mind that an ill-fitting bra can potentially cause blocked ducts and mastitis.” Mastitis is an inflammation that is easily spotted with the naked eye, the breast is red, painful, hot and can also swell. It mainly happens to pregnant women and breastfeeding women. But it is possible to avoid mastitis by quickly treating the blocked duct during breastfeeding… One of the causes would therefore be an ill-fitting, poorly positioned or unsuitable bra for breastfeeding.

To avoid this, Lucy Webber gives advice: “It is well known that a significant percentage of people wear the wrong size bra. An ill-fitting underwire bra could potentially cause blocked ducts and mastitis. An underwired bra may not be the best option” Points on which it is necessary to be vigilant especially during the first months of postpartum, the size of your chest fluctuates, you must therefore wear suitable bras!
