Released in 2017, “Spider-Man: Homecoming” begins with a big chronological error, which fans did not fail to notice. In a recent work, Marvel also recognized this anomaly and attempted to resolve it.
We are at the start of Spider-Man: Homecoming, the first part of the trilogy led by Tom Holland (saga which now has an official name). Directed by Jon Watts in 2017, the feature film begins with a flashback sequence set in 2012, a few days after the terrible Battle of New York which raged in the first Avengers.
We see the character of Adrian Toomes (future Vulture played by Michael Keaton) recovering remains of Chitauris material, which will later be used to design his flying exoskeleton. Once the scene is over, a card reading “8 years later” appears on the screen, and the feature film takes us back to contemporary times, where Peter Parker lives his daily life as a high school student peppered with super heroic adventures in the skies of Manhattan.
However, as fans of the MCU did not fail to point out after the release of the film, the number of years indicated on this elliptical cardboard does not hold up at all. Indeed, if 8 years had actually passed since the Battle of New York (in 2012), the action of Spider-Man: Homecoming should logically take place in 2020, and not in 2016.

This big error, corroborated by a line from Adrian Toomes (who explains that he managed to escape the government “for 8 years”) was recently officially recognized by Marvel between the pages of the book Marvel Studios’ The Marvel Cinematic Universe – An Official Timeline (according to the website The Direct).
In this book dedicated to the MCU chronology, mention is made of the blunder made at the start of Spider-Man: Homecoming. Through Miss Minute, the little TVA talking clock found in the recent Loki series, a justification even attempts to be provided for this anomaly.
By the way, what does Marvel mean?
“Red Alert! Hello again! Adrien Toomes says the Battle of New York happened 8 years ago, but this event was only four years earlier. This situation has really been a headache for us. I imagine that an analyst misplaced the file”declares Miss Minute.
We can therefore deduce from this explanation – which humorously disguises the writers’ blunder as a TVA anomaly – that Homecoming takes place 4 years (and not 8) after the first Avengers.
