The sordid facts took place between June 2015 and June 2016. An English nurse is accused of having killed seven premature newborns during this time and tried to kill ten others, reports The Parisian Monday, July 10, 2023. It has been more than nine months since the woman, now 33, stood trial for the murders and attempts perpetrated in the neonatal intensive care unit of the Countess of Chester Hospital, a city in the northwest of England. She would have “injected air into their probes [celles des bébés, N.D.L.R.]added insulin to bags of food solution administered intravenously”. Lucy Letby, then 25 years old at the time of the events, had been arrested three times from 2017 as part of the investigationand arrested in July 2018 for the first time.

Several dysfunctions had been noted during the investigation. Neonatal mortality is said to have quadrupled in four years in Lucy Letby’s unit. A report also noted that “some infants, deceased or not, had unusual marks on their arms and legs.” On the other hand, according to prosecutor Nick Johnson, there are similarities between the nurse’s schedule and some deaths. Her guess is that she was acting when the parents were gone and the nurse in charge walked away. Other very disturbing elements, notes found at the home of the young woman look like confessions: “I don’t deserve to live. I purposely killed them because I’m not good enough to take care of them. I’m a horrible bad person”, “I am the devil. I did this!”, can we read in particular on the latter. Lucy Letby also reportedly repeatedly searched for the parents of her victims on Facebook. For the moment, the accused denies it in block. She reportedly said on the stand that “his whole world had stopped” because of these suspicions of “disgusting crimes”. The jury must now deliberate to seal its fate. Lucy Letby remains presumed innocent of the charges against her.
