A particularly brutal decision by Ubisoft that could cause you to lose access to your games is causing outrage on social networks.
Remember the days when we had to step outside to pick up our little video game box in the store. If some still prefer to do it this way, a good part of the players go through the dematerialized to obtain their titles. In addition to platforms like Steam or the Epic Games Store, several publishers also go there from their own online store, such as EA or Ubisoft. Unfortunately, the latter has just angered many players because of a decision considered particularly brutal.
A decision by Ubisoft creates outrage
On Twitter, a player’s post sparked a heated controversy. In his tweet, he shares a screenshot of an email sent by Ubisoft in which he learns that his account has been suspended and that it will be deleted if he does not log in within 30 days, thus losing access to all his games. A tweet seen more than two million times which aroused the indignation of many players, even pushing Ubisoft support to react directly. This specifies that in order not to lose his account, he must click on the link included in the email. On its official website, the French company indicates that only accounts that have had no activity for more than four years are subject to this deletion… but that exceptional cases may arise.
Rest assured, Ubisoft does not automatically close inactive accounts. As part of our Terms of Service, in rare cases, we may immediately close inactive accounts to comply with local data protection laws. We will only do this if we have good reason to believe that the account in question will remain unused.
The retro game in danger?
Please note that Ubisoft support specifies that if your account is closed, you will no longer be able to access your games, even if you purchased them on a platform such as Steam, for example. Obviously, this particularly criticized decision revives the debate around the dematerialized and the safeguard of the heritage of the video game. Do you really own your games when you buy them from an online store? If Ubisoft or another platform decides to close our account or simply its service, our entire catalog and the money invested simply goes up in smoke. According to a recent study by the Video Game History Foundation, 87% of video games released before 2010 in the United States are on the verge of extinction because they are inaccessible. In view of the situation, we advise players to take a good look if they have not received an email from Ubisoft so as not to have any unpleasant surprises.
