Despite its many limitations, the PlayStation Portal gave DIY Perks a rich idea to make a truly portable version of the PS5.
We already owe this YouTube channel, in 2022, a PS5 that is only 2 cm thick and yet liquid-cooled. We are now moving to another level, with the power of the Sony console contained in a tablet. No question of game streaming here, everything is rendered very beautifully in a relatively portable device, and the result is really convincing.
PlayStation Portal can go get dressed?
While the PS5 Slim inspired a modder to offer a truly smaller model called PS5 Tiny, this time it was Sony’s latest accessory that gave ideas to an inventive mind. PlayStation Portal willy-nilly lives up to its name, acting as a streaming portal, and therefore entirely dependent on the PS5.
DIY Perks therefore tried to do what Sony has not done for 10 years: a true “portable” console, but here equipped with the full power of the PS5. Despite a smaller motherboard on the latest models of the console, the only way to contain all of this was in a tablet, which you will notice is quite thick.
A large part of the video shows us how DIY Perks managed to transform the PS5 into a tablet, with the many technical challenges that this entails.
Lots of elbow grease, and the portable magic happens
For those who have never seen the insides of a PS5, here is also a great opportunity to discover them. DIY Perks has in fact recovered the motherboard of the PS5 to integrate it into a chassis entirely designed for this purpose, largely using a 3D printer.
The biggest part of the work was adapting the console’s massive cooling system into a much more compact format. A lot of elbow grease, two heatsinks, copper pipes and a little chemistry made this possible. DIY Perks added three fans, an audio system, and there you have a whole PS5 contained in an elegant, but relatively thick tablet.
Regarding the screen, the modder opted for an OLED model recovered from a defective Alienware laptop PC. All that remained was to find a sufficiently robust power supply, connect it to a power source via a cable specially designed for this purpose, and see how everything works. And the end result is truly impressive, with superb image quality and the full performance of a PS5 in a near-portable form factor.
Enough to give Sony some ideas? Unfortunately, nothing is less certain, but we can bet that, with the rise of PC/portable console hybrids like the Steam Deck, such a proposal could easily find its audience, where the PlayStation Portal has not really attracted the crowds.
A true chameleon, the Nintendo Switch has given rise to many vocations and, since its release, the number of portable consoles has exploded. Whatever your desires, there is sure to be a model for you!
