Spaceship, prostheses, Rocket in the middle… On the occasion of the release of “Guardians of the Galaxy 3”, here are 5 things to know about this 32nd Marvel feature film.
What is it about ? Our favorite band of misfits has changed a bit. Peter Quill, still mourning the loss of Gamora, must rally his team to defend the universe and protect one of his own. If unsuccessful, this mission could well mark the end of Guardians as we know them.

For the creation of the Guardians’ new starship, The Bowie, production designer Beth Mickle and her team built three fully functional floors. The ship features six distinct areas as well as an enormous cockpit. This is the largest checkpoint ever designed in Marvel history: the realism of the construction allowed the actors to survey this space in all directions.
Because the parts of the ship are connected together, the camera team was able to get shots that would have been impossible otherwise. The vessel – which took more than four months to build – was erected on a 1,400 square meter plateau.
In terms of make-up, Guardians of the Galaxy 3 also broke another world record: that of the number of prostheses created for a single film production, ahead of The Grinch (2000) with Jim Carrey. James Gunn says: “There are indeed many. We must have created hundreds of creatures, which we call humanimals, living on Counter-Earth.”

The 32nd MCU movie
Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is the second MCU Phase 5 film after Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. It is also the 32nd feature film in the lucrative Marvel saga that began in 2008. The blockbuster story takes place nine years after Guardians of the Galaxy 2, two years after Avengers: Endgame and shortly after Thor: Love and Thunder.
Separately, Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) grossed $771 million worldwide on an estimated budget of $170. Its sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, grossed $869 million on a production cost of $200. The third opus has an estimated budget, again at $200 million (which is in the average of Marvel films).

Rocket in the center
Rocket’s story drives the story of this third installment. When he imagined the scenario, james gunn had only one certainty: “There were a lot of things that I guessed and a lot that I didn’t know, but I knew that for me the heart of the story was Rocket and his story: where he came from, who he is. He’s a little animal that’s been taken away and turned into something it shouldn’t have been.”
“He felt completely ostracized and alienated by all other life forms in the galaxy. This is why he is angry and afraid. This loneliness is the very essence of the three Guardians of the Galaxy. It’s funny because audiences see them as lighthearted and fun movies as they’re carried along by the emotions of Rocket and his companions.”says the director.
He adds : “The whole crew is made up of misfits who feel out of place. But rifts appear between some of the characters and they start to appreciate and love each other.”

The design of Knowhere
The construction of the Knowhere mining colony took more than six months. On the largest plateau of Trilith, an entire city has been built on almost 3,700 square meters, with 20 separate buildings (interior and exterior).
Partially designed by Charles Wood in the first film, Knowhere has been expanded even further. Coining the term “space deco”, the designers created a combination of traditional art deco and the addition of bevels, circles, pylons and plasterwork in areas normally invisible.

The newcomers
New faces joining the action include Will Poulter who brings Adam Warlock to life (for the first time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe), Maria Bakalova who voices Cosmo in the original version (the space dog by the Soviets who then ended up in the hands of the Collector) as well as Chukwudi Iwuji in the skin of the Master of Evolution (an anti-hero created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, who appeared for the first time in the comic- book The Mighty Thor #134 in November 1966).
