TO REMEMBER

To overcome the demon of The Nun 2, it was therefore not necessary to have an exorcist but… an artificial intelligence. Which is no more surprising than that, as the subject is currently agitating Hollywood, on the screens as well as behind the scenes. But The Creator therefore beat the latest spin-off from the Conjuring saga for its debut in French theaters.

With 262,507 admissions after its first week of release, Gareth Edwards’ new feature film is already better than the total score for his Monsters (67,514 spectators in 2010).

But it is far from the starts of Godzilla (720,996) and Rogue One (1,798,117), its Star Wars spin-off. Two films which, it is true, benefited from the impact of their respective sagas.

Leader for two consecutive weeks, La Nonne 2 lost a place but is slowly approaching a million admissions. A milestone that only two Conjuringverse opuses have not reached in France (Annabelle 3 and The Curse of the White Lady). Michael Chaves’ film should not be part of it, but it will be difficult to match the 1,394,105 spectators of the previous episode.

In a ranking where four new releases manage to place themselves (and the fifth, Coup de chance by Woody Allen, narrowly misses the Top 10), The Nun 2 is putting up resistance. And get ahead Dogmanwhich marks one of the worst starts of Luc Besson’s career (and the lowest since 1994, CBO – Box-Office not having the starts of his films released before).

Complicated beginnings for Franck Dubosc and Karin Viard as well. Despite their combined box office potentials, the New start in which they respond to each other is disappointing, despite a higher number of copies than among the members of the leading trio.

With only 35% fewer entries compared to the previous week, Mystery in Venice holds up well. Even if it seems difficult to find the scores of the two previous adaptations of Agatha Christie by Kenneth Branagh, Murder on the Orient Express (1,464,983) and Death on the Nile (874,086).

But the good surprise comes to us from Goldman trial. Despite its dry form which could have put off more than one person, 110,011 spectators went to (re)immerse themselves in this brilliantly told affair. Which gives Cédric Kahn’s film one of the best averages per copy, and allows it to do better than Dogman, New Beginnings or The Nonne 2 in this regard, but less well than The Creator.

Actor in The Goldman Trial, Arthur Harari has a second film in the Top 10 this week: Anatomy of a fallPalme d’Or at the last Cannes Film Festival of which he is the co-writer (in addition to making a small appearance in a scene from a literary program).

With 1,150,725 admissions to date, Justine Triet’s feature film has already done better than La Vie d’Adèle and Othello, among the winners. And should surpass Dancer in the Dark and Les Parapluies de Cherbourg in the coming weeks.
