  • A BLS train derailed on the Simplon line on the Italian side on Sunday afternoon, with no one injured.
  • The cause of the accident was boulders on the rails near Preglia outside Domodossola.
  • According to the SBB, the Brig-Domodossola route is only accessible to a limited extent until around 10 a.m. on Monday morning.

The derailed train was heading towards Brig in Valais. A BLS spokesman confirmed reports from the Italian news agency Ansa to the Keystone-SDA news agency that the accident occurred around 15 kilometers from the Swiss border.

According to Ansa, 150 people were on board the derailed train. A train traveling from the opposite direction to Domodossola was stopped. The railway line was initially closed for an indefinite period of time.

To maintain the connection, the BLS uses buses between Domodossola and Varzo. The fire brigade carried out overflights with a helicopter to check the stability of the slope from which the rock material had broken out.
