The peaceful town of Floirac, affiliated with Bordeaux Métropole, is under the influence of a cyberattack. The latter deprives residents of many municipal services, and the town hall of its computer network.
Thursday evening, teams from Floirac town hall launched the alert. The town of around 18,000 inhabitants, located in the Gironde department and part of the urban unit of Bordeaux, is at a standstill from an administrative point of view, due to a cyberattack. Hackers have probably penetrated the municipality’s computer network, which is now out of service. What is going on ?
A cyberattack at town hall, staff invited to telework
It was shortly before 10 p.m., this Thursday, April 18, 2024, that the town of Floirac published a message, on social networks, reporting a “ cyber attack at town hall “. In detail, the message explains that “ the town hall’s digital servers were victims of a significant cyberattack. »
The severity would be such that the affected municipal services concerned are at a standstill. Floirac’s digital security equipment was compromised. The city has also requested the emergency intervention of Bordeaux Métropole teams, with which it shares equipment.
In addition to municipal services being stopped, municipal management applications are no longer operational, and this “ until further notice », warns the town hall. As a result, some members of the municipality were ordered to favor teleworking.
As a precautionary measure, only telephony remains available in the municipality
Floirac therefore suspended the municipality’s networks but also all internet access, as well as ” access to common data centers “. For the moment, only telephony is working. If the town hall’s identity card and passport services physically remained open this Friday, ” we operate in degraded mode to ensure essential tasks », Adds the municipality, which has no other choice but to make do with the means at hand.
The information systems would not have been damaged by the computer attack. We would also not note any data exfiltrated following the incident, which remains good news, even if an investigation is still underway. As for the perpetrators of the cyberattack, we still don’t know anything about them.
The town hall, which communicated again this Friday at 6:30 p.m., said it hoped for a restoration of the affected services on Monday morning.
