A sober and overpowered laptop

It’s the comeback of hardware tests on Gameblog and for the occasion we offer you the test of the overpowered ACER Triton 500 SE. Behind this name hides a PC that is certainly quite expensive but also a war machine to run any present and future AAA game.

We therefore had the opportunity to test the Triton 500 SE from ACER, which represents the top of the manufacturer’s basket, if not the very top of the range. This is a new version, 2021 edition of a PC which we had already had the opportunity to discuss in the past. With, of course, state-of-the-art components.

Sober despite its power

Like its predecessors, this 2021 model drops the superfluous in terms of design to focus on assumed aesthetic sobriety. With such a configuration, there is not necessarily a need for a flashy adornment as was the case a few years ago in the small world of laptops. Here we have the right to an elegant metallic gray chassis, thin enough for the overpowered GPU it embeds (RTX 3080). Only the covering of the rear and side cooling grilles gives an indication of what may be under the bodywork. ACER made the wise choice (for right-handers) to place the power supply on the left side of the PC, so the addition of a mouse will not interfere with and hinder the movement of the cables.

The power of Mini-LED

Once the PC is open, we find the 16-inch mini-LED panel in 16/10 format. This offers a WQXGA resolution (2560 x 1600) with a refresh rate of 165 Hz and a latency of 3 ms. Entirely matte, it does not reflect light and can therefore also be used very easily outdoors without causing too much pain to the eyes. The Mini-LED technology without being revolutionary brings a lot of things with in particular a much better luminosity and a big reduction in the blooming effect (halo effect around bright objects on a dark background). The other advantage and not the least for a laptop is that the technology will allow you to have a thinner screen. And indeed this ACER Triton 500 SE is relatively thin in addition to offering quality contrast and general brightness.

A good keyboard and a very useful fingerprint reader

The keyboard is a HyperX with backlight RGB three zones via utilityand PredatorSense to configure the set as desired. We are obviously far from the quality of a good mechanical but despite everything this chiclet keyboard remains above the lot of other keyboards of its kind. With a pleasant typing and a good touch return. Everything is quiet and responsive to the delight of those around you. Note on the touchpad the presence of a fingerprint reader to unlock the PC very quickly, the use is very pleasant because once again very responsive. Something very optional but devilishly effective which we quickly regret the absence on another PC. Like what, you get used to luxury very quickly.

ACER has also improved its speakers with less nasal sound and better spatialization than usual. Even if the choice of a helmet always proves more judicious, or quite simply good speakers if you are at home. We can only salute the effort of ACER on this subject which has nevertheless made a good evolution.

Now let’s see what’s under the hood.

A configuration of choice

  • Processor : Intel Core i9-11900H (2.5GHz).
  • Graphic card : NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 8GB GDDR6 110W.
  • Storage : 2 x NVMe SSD 1024 GB RAID
  • RAM : 32 GB (DDR4-3200).

This ACER Predator Triton 500 SE is equipped with an Intel Core i9-11900H processor with an excellent RTX 3080 and 32 GB of DDR4 RAM. Clearly it is quite difficult to do better in terms of power and everything is at your fingertips without concession even on games that are still very greedy like a certain Cyberpunk 2077.

Cyberpunk 2077:

  • 2560×1600 Ultra RTX DLSS : 75 FPS average
  • 2560×1600 Ultra RTX : 48 FPS average

Metro Exodus

  • 2560×1600 Ultra RTX DLSS : 78 FPS average
  • 2560×1600 Ultra RTX : 49 FPS average

These are two demanding games and as you can see the RTX/DLSS combo (which is made to work together anyway) gives very good results. We are clearly on the kind of configuration that allows you to live without hassle for many years. It must be said that for the price (3199 euros) it is better to respect this condition.

To cool all this, the ACER Predator Triton 500 SE has two fans for the graphics card and one dedicated solely to the processor. Everything works with the 5th generation AeroBlade technology and the famous vortex flow allowing to mix more air. Obviously this helps to avoid overheating but it is also extremely noisy. In Turbo mode, we are clearly on a take-off runway from the Charles de Gaulle Aircraft Carrier. The fans are programmable via the PredatorSense software (speed and monitoring).
