A Tesla Model S at the price of a Model 3? This is what this Chinese manufacturer promises when it arrives in France

The world number 2 in electric cars, the Chinese giant BYD, finally unveils the price of its three models reserved for France: Atto 3, Han and Tang. What to compete with Tesla, the leader of the sector?

Article updated on October 16, 2022 : During an event held in Paris on October 15, the Chinese manufacturer BYD unveiled the prices of its three electric cars which have just been launched in France.

It will therefore cost 39,990 euros for the cheapest, the Atto 3, in the 50 kWh version (estimated autonomy of 350 km) and from 43,690 euros for the 60 kWh version (autonomy of 420 km).

For the Han sedan and the Tang SUV, prices start from 70,800 euros.

If it is a good surprise for the Han and Tang which are cheaper than the first prices unveiled in Germany, it is much less interesting for the Atto 3 which takes almost 2,000 euros more than the first prices across the Rhine.

Original article from September 28, 2022 : The Chinese giant BYD arrives in France and does not do things by halves. The prices of its three electric cars (Han, Tang and Atto 3) have been revealed. The least we can say is that they are aggressive for some.

The year 2023 promises to be a tidal wave of Chinese electric car manufacturers in Europe and particularly in France. We already knew that the world number 2 in electric cars, Chinese BYD, was heading to Europe. The latter finally reveals the European price of its three electric cars, the Han, Tang and Atto 3.

BYD Atto 3: a compact SUV for 38,000 euros

The BYD Atto 3 is an electric SUV, with its length of 4.455 m, its trunk with a capacity of 440 liters and its range of 420 km with its 60.48 kWh LFP Blade battery. Power level, it will take 150 kW sent to the front wheels to achieve 0 to 100 km / h in 7.3 seconds with a speed limited to 160 km / h.

It will be available in Europe from 38,000 euros, excluding bonuses. This is an attractive price since it competes head-on with the Kia Niro EV and Hyundai Kona Electric, marketed respectively for 44,490 euros and 41,700 euros for ranges of 460 km and 484 km.

BYD Han: a Model S for 72,000 euros?

The BYD Han is a long electric sedan (4.995 m), which wishes to tackle the premium segment, like the Mercedes-Benz EQE or Tesla Model S. There is thus a 380 kW motor supplying the four-wheel drive, allowing to go from 0 to 100 km in 3.9 seconds. The size of the trunk is a bit small for the category with only 410 liters. Its mixed WLTP autonomy is announced at 521 km (85.4 kWh LFP Blade battery) and its speed limited to 180 km/h.

Inside, there is a luxurious feeling, with two screens in the rear for passengers to allow them to adjust the inclination of the Nappa leather seats, manage the opening of the sunroof flap, the light ambient or ventilation. However, we are far from the rear screen of the new Tesla Model S Plaid which allows rear passengers to play on it. A little extra: the suspensions are controlled.

The price, announced at 72,000 euros, seems quite well positioned compared to the competition since it is close to the price of a Tesla Model 3 Performance. However, this will have to be verified during a dynamic test.

BYD Tang: a 7-seater SUV at 72,00 euros

Finally, the BYD Tang is a large, three-row, seven-seat SUV. The engine is similar to the BYD Han, with a 0 to 100 km / h which requires 4.6 seconds and a reduced autonomy, at 400 km with its LFP Blade battery of 86.4 kWh. As for the trunk, the car offers 235 liters in the seven-seater version and 940 liters in the five-seater version.

The BYD Tang therefore enters into direct competition with the Tesla Model Y at 49,990 euros (but where is the seven-seater version in Europe?) but also the Mercedes EQB sold for 58,200 euros or the Tesla Model X at 110,000 euros. The price positioning of the Chinese newcomer is therefore a little stranger than for other BYD vehicles.

The common points between the three BYD cars

The Chinese manufacturer’s three electric cars all have a panoramic roof, a standard heat pump to increase range in cold weather, also used to heat and cool the battery, with an eight-year warranty. There are also many driving aids to be able to offer level 2 semi-autonomous driving.

The prices indicated may vary according to national markets since these are prices for Germany. This is the first market that should be served, along with Belgium, the Netherlands and the Nordic countries, with the first deliveries from the end of the year. It will be possible to place an order in the coming days, after the Paris Motor Show where the brand will present the three models and the precise prices for each country.

For France and the United Kingdom, it will be necessary to wait until next year, in 2023, for the first deliveries.

The weak points of BYD cars

The big downside of the BYD Han, Tang and Atto 3 is the charging power: between 120 and 130 kW at most, which translates into around thirty minutes to go from 30 to 80%. A constraint when the competition goes from 10 to 80% over the same duration, or even 18 minutes for cars using an 800-volt electrical architecture such as the Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Porsche Taycan.

We look forward to seeing you from October 17th since we will be at the Mondial de l’Auto in Paris to present these three electric cars to you in detail.
