What is it about ?

Brutalized by his boss, exploited 24 hours a day, he has become a slave to his business. But when a zombie invasion occurs, he finds his way back to life!

A zombie shark, an almost superhero and a lot of blood

What would you do if a zombie invasion happened? A question asked many times in a bunch of movies and series of the living dead. If this genre of works often chooses the path of drama, thriller and violent and psychological survivalism, the path of comedy is also a good way to treat the subject, as in Shaun of the Dead or Welcome to Zombieland.

This is the case of the new summer comedy on Netflix entitled Zom 100: The List of Death, adapted from the manga of the same name written by Haro Aso (the creator of Alice in Borderland) and illustrated by Kotaro Tokata. This Japanese film has won over subscribers to the streaming service since it is number 4 in the platform’s top views.

Directed by Yûsuke Ishida (former editor on Attack on Titan) on a screenplay written by Tatsuro Mishima, Zom 100: The List of Death tells the delirious adventures of Akira Tendo (Eiji Akaso), an office worker on the edge of the burnout.

Exploited and harassed by his boss Gonzo Kosugi (Kazuki Kitamura), Akira spends his days feeling like a living dead who suffers from his professional situation encroaching on his personal life. But this feeling will soon prove to be a reality when Akira wakes up in a city infested with zombies.

Anyone would have panicked in the face of this apocalyptic context, but Akira is overjoyed because he no longer has to return to the office! Not letting himself be defeated and quickly accepting the situation, the young man says to himself that he will, paradoxically, finally be able to live.

He decides to write a list of 100 things to do before becoming a zombie such as “camping at my house”, “tidying up my room”, “relaxing in hot springs”, “having a drink with a flight attendant “, “ride a motorcycle”, “dye my hair”, “paint a self-portrait”, “fill a shopping cart without worrying about the price”, etc…

But the situation is still more complicated when thousands of zombies are walking around. His new lifestyle will push him to his limits but will also push him to surpass himself and fight for what he wants and what he deserves. Akira will thus rescue his best friend Kencho (Shuntaro Yanagi), stuck in a brothel, and Shizauka (Mai Shiraishi), a resourceful young survivor.

If the trio embarks on an amazing and fun road trip, they will quickly realize that even in a post-apocalyptic world, the strict rules of capitalist society can fall back into place very easily and if Akira wants to achieve the 100 things to do on his list, he will really have to overcome his fears and become the superhero he always wanted to be.

Zom 100: The Death List plays the quirky and fun gore card to the fullest, however the Japanese film also plays the emotional card thanks to its endearing characters whose adventures we follow with a certain sympathy.

But don’t panic, this feature film doesn’t turn into a melodrama and keeps all its madness in unexpected and completely crazy sequences during zombie attacks (with an undead shark!), combat techniques worthy of the films of superheroes and a pop and rhythmic soundtrack.

Zom 100: Death List is available on Netflix.
