ABB: locomotive modernization contract in Romania

(CercleFinance.com) – ABB announced this morning that it had won a major order for the supply of complete traction chains intended to modernize 19 5,100 kilowatt (kW) locomotives operated by CFR Călători, the Romanian public passenger rail company.

ABB will supply the traction equipment, including transformers, converters and electric motors, in partnership with Reloc, a local contractor specializing in locomotive overhaul and modernization.

The project will help bring Romanian locomotives to high levels of energy efficiency and reliability in order to align with European transport standards.

This is a crucial issue since the country’s aging public transport infrastructure means passenger trains currently run at an average speed of just 40 km/h, ABB says.
