Ultimately, the Hollywood strike did not have dramatic consequences for Netflix, confided Ted Sarandos, co-CEO of the platform. However, it was not without repercussions for the streaming industry.

The strike movement, which began in May, is considered one of the largest in Hollywood history. Faced with the rise of streaming, authors, then screenwriters, expressed their dissatisfaction with the precariousness of their profession. They also denounced the emergence of generative artificial intelligence (AI), which represents a new threat to their activity. After several sessions of negotiations, an agreement was finally reached with the major studios of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), putting an end to several months of strike.

Delays, but no interruptions

At the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference, Ted Sarandos, who was at the negotiating table, moderated the impact of the event. While he admitted that the platform does not have “ excess content “, he explained that she had not known ” interrupt » in the delivery of his works. According to him, the COVID-19 pandemic has had far more detrimental effects.

The service will be able to launch its hit titles without delay. From 2024, new seasons of Bridgerton, Cobra Kai And Emily in Paris are to be expected. Two films with great potential, Rebel Moon And Maestro, are also scheduled for this month of December. “ Above all, we are delighted that the strikes are behind us. I’m really happy about it “, confided the leader.

Even so, Netflix saw some of its original productions delayed by strikes for much of 2023. However, the company is still targeting a content budget of $17 billion for 2024, reflecting its good health compared to some of its competitors.

A sector in difficulty

Moreover, Ted Sarandos did not hesitate to tackle his rivals. While Netflix “ adjusts its prices at each stage “, did he declare, ” our competitors seem to be cutting content and raising prices “.

The streaming sector is currently experiencing significant difficulties, after exponential growth during the pandemic period. Netflix was particularly affected, with an unprecedented loss of subscribers in 2022. The service was able to bounce back, in particular by putting an end to account sharing, launching an offer supported by advertising and readjusting its prices.

More than ever, Netflix is asserting its position as the leader in the sector against competitors who are trying to adapt. “ Streaming is a good business, but it’s difficult », concluded Ted Sarandos.

Netflix

  • The most complete on the market
  • Often excellent original series
  • Impeccable video compression

The American service is not the most popular in the world for nothing. With a range of content enriched every week, always optimal video quality and a highly refined user experience, the platform is an essential choice for entertainment. Our only regret remains the constant increase in subscription prices, which makes the service a little less attractive than when it was launched… Fortunately, the number of series and films compensates for this increase, even if the quality or certainty of seeing arriving new seasons is not always there.
