Samsung has just unveiled its very first ultra wideband chip, short-range wireless communication technology that operates over a wide spectrum of frequencies. It will offer much more precise geolocation to the brand’s connected devices.

It is called Exynos Connect U100, strangely reminiscent of Apple’s U1 chip which powers AirTags.

A geolocation of the order of a centimeter

The U100 is equipped with centimeter-level and sub-5 degree distance measurement capabilities. She is ” optimized for use in mobile, automotive and Internet of Things (IoT) devices, providing accurate distance and location information “, promises the South Korean giant in a blog post. Its accuracy makes it a perfect candidate to equip, among other things, the company’s connected key fobs, the SmartTag.

It integrates radio frequency, baseband, flash memory and power management into a single chip, ” making it ideal for use in compact devices “, guarantees Samsung. Also, the U100 can maximize the battery life of mobile and automotive solutions as well as IoT devices (connected devices capable of communicating with others), all thanks to its power saving mode.

Samsung explains that the chip is ideal for uses such as virtual reality and augmented reality, technologies requiring precise and real-time tracking of people in motion.

Smartphones that integrate the chip will also be able to communicate their digital keys with vehicles and third parties. The U100 has in fact been certified by the FiRa Consortium, which verifies the compliance of ultra-wideband products with interoperability standards, as well as by the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC) Digital Key Release 3.0. It is a standardized ecosystem that allows mobile devices to store, authenticate and share digital vehicle keys.

The release of the U100 is part of the wider launch of Samsung’s new Exynos Connect brand. This one ” consolidates its short-range wireless communication solutions, such as ultra wideband, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, which are essential to facilitate an increasingly hyperconnected world “.

For now, the South Korean manufacturer has not revealed which of its future devices will be equipped with its new technology.
