Acts of vandalism observed in two churches, Gérald Darmanin announces investigations

The Minister of the Interior described as “unacceptable” the damage and theft committed in the churches of Romainville and Bondy, in Seine-Saint-Denis

Gérald Darmanin announced Wednesday evening the opening of two investigations to find the perpetrators of acts of vandalism committed in the churches of Romainville and Bondy, in Seine-Saint-Denis. In a tweet, the Minister of the Interior gave his “support to the Catholics of our country”, and described “these acts as unacceptable”.

Gérald Darmanin will visit these two churches on Thursday morning, which were the target of acts of vandalism overnight from Sunday to Monday. The diocese of Saint-Denis-en-France filed a complaint.

Fractured Tabernacle

At the opening of the church on Monday morning, a volunteer “immediately noticed that the trunk of the church had been sawn with a grinder to steal the money”, relates the diocese, concerning the church of Bondy.

The diocese also details the various degradations: “A broken stained glass window, the tabernacle profaned, fractured and emptied of its contents, the sacristy with a broken door and where another liturgical object was stolen, as well as a laptop computer”.

In Romainville, “a trunk was torn off, the tabernacle was fractured, the sound equipment, stolen, and the cupboards of the sacristy, stripped of several sacred vessels”, writes the diocese.
