The Tesla Android project, which aims to exploit the integrated internet browser of Tesla vehicles in order to display the Android Auto or Apple CarPlay interface, is taking a new step. From now on, a turnkey device is offered for a price slightly lower than 350 euros.
We tried to install an additional screen in one of our Teslas to have CarPlay and Android Auto. A solution that is easier to implement technically is also available.
We told you about the Tesla Android project in May 2022, which essentially allows you to use CarPlay and Android Auto in your Tesla. Initially designed for those who do not mind handling a few lines of code and who have a Raspberry Pi 4 as well as several adapters, the project is now evolving by offering a turnkey solution.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in your Tesla
Among the features expected by many Tesla owners, we regularly see Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Although full of technology, a Tesla in 2023 still does not offer the possibility of using these two systems.
It is an assumed choice of the American firm, proud of its embedded software which is both fluid, relatively intuitive and particularly complete.. Remember for all practical purposes that we find natively Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal, TuneIn, a web browser, playback of videos when stopped (via Disney+, Netflix, YouTube, etc.), the calendar, the diary calls and messages from your smartphone as well as on-board navigation with a fairly successful route planner.
Regardless, for people used to CarPlay and Android Auto, whether for Waze, a podcast app or reading messages, it can be disappointing not to be able to do the same in Tesla.
Tesla Android Simplified
Tesla Android recently introduced an integrated turnkey solution to facilitate the integration of their hardware, a less intrusive approach than installing an additional screen. However, it should be noted that the performances obtained with this solution are not equivalent to those of alternative installations. Our colleagues from MacGeneration tested the Tesla Android solution in its original form, and unfortunately the latency does not do justice to the technical prowess.
This turnkey solution was designed to avoid having to bother with the configuration of the various required components. Available for a price slightly less than 350 euros on the website of its creator, this option is certainly not cheap, but it offers the advantage of sparing you any technical manipulation. For those looking for a hassle-free experience and are willing to invest to avoid any fiddling, this is a convenient alternative.
There is no information regarding an improvement in performance, particularly latency, with this out-of-the-box solution. Only the first tests will be able to confirm this.
