Adept: this game inspired by Portal refused by Nintendo

In 2007 came out Portalan innovative puzzle game developed by Valve and which quickly became extremely popular. The same year was released Metroid Prime 3, Retro Studios could breathe a little, but designer Paul Tozour already had a prototype under his belt for the GameCube, very inspired by Portal.

This prototype was Adept, a first-person puzzle game with cylinders boasting multiple abilities, such as those of teleporting or repelling objects. Players had to place different cylinders to solve puzzles but also engage in combat. DidYouKnowGaming reveals pictures of gameplay Unreleased Adeptand above all tells the sequence of events.

Paul Tozour went to propose Adept to Kensuke Tanabe, producer of Metroid Prime at the house of Nintendobut the latter refused the projectnot seeing its potential and not yet knowing Portal. Paul Tozour explains that Nintendo Japan is very closed in on himself, not liking to create games that he did not invent. Worse still, he wanted to offer a copy of Portal to Kensuke Tanabe so that he discovers the title of Valve and reviews his judgment on Adeptbut he refused the game, as internal policy prohibits gifts.

DidYouKnowGaming also highlights other games canceled by Retro Studios And Nintendoas Raven BladeA RPG too ambitious for the GameCube, or even Metaforcetransformed throughout its development to become… Metroid Primebased on an idea by Shigeru Miyamoto.
