  • Republican Steve Scalise withdraws his candidacy for chairman of the US House of Representatives.
  • The Republicans had nominated him just a day earlier as a possible successor to Kevin McCarthy, who was voted out of office.

Steve Scalise has withdrawn his candidacy for Speaker of the US House of Representatives. The 58-year-old announced this to journalists on Thursday evening (local time).

The reason is that he did not manage to secure enough votes in his own group. There are still some people in his party who have their own agenda, Scalise continued. Because of several dissidents in the Republican ranks, he was denied the necessary majority of 217 votes in the Congressional Chamber.

Because Republicans continue to disagree about McCarthy’s successor, it is initially unclear what will happen next. After the previous speaker, Kevin McCarthy, was voted out at the beginning of October, the US House of Representatives remains leaderless and the American Congress is virtually unable to act.
