After menopause: Women should use sex toys

“Women after menopause – use sex toys!”

It’s no secret that women have sex. But for some people they still have it (want to have it) even after menopause. This is highly recommended.

In the minds of many people, sex is something that primarily young, sexy people have. The older women get, the more invisible they become when it comes to sexuality. In public discourse, they simply don’t seem to have any more, while men are still assumed to be active in bed. In reality, women still want sex even when they are over 50. And not only that: orgasms also have many health benefits for women after Menopause, as professor Joyce Harper explains to the Daily Mail. That’s why she recommends that all women who are in this phase of life use sex toys as they please.

“Masturbation is medicine”

Joyce Harper is a reproductive doctor and teaches at University College London. She has been working on women’s health for more than 30 years. Her research focuses on menstruation, the childbearing years and menopause. For her own book project, she has now interviewed dozens of women about their sex lives. While some women are still sexually active, others have already put the topic aside.

The reasons for this are diverse. Some are missing the partner they lost through divorce or death, for others sexuality is simply no longer a priority, or they suffer from health restrictions – their own or those of their partner. The influence of hormones should not be underestimated either.

Menopause: Sex different now?

“While I entered perimenopause in my early 40s and had three small children at home, sex was definitely not high on my priority list.” writes Harper from his own experience and calls it a “mean trick of the hormones.”

Menopause in particular, which lasts about 10 years, is a major challenge for most women, during which they may face mood swings, insomnia, decreased libido and physical changes. These include vaginal athropy (vaginal dryness) or Incontinence She explains reasons why sex becomes more painful and complicated. You can find out more about this in our article Menopause and Sexuality. But the vagina is a muscle and it should be trained. Otherwise it will wither away more and more.

For Harper, her recommendation is not about wild bedroom exercises when she says that women should still be sexually active after menopause. She is primarily concerned with the health aspect. And that in turn makes a taboo topic – the sexuality of older women – definitely worth discussing.

That’s why women should use sex toys after menopause

The nice thing is: Regular orgasms can help with many of these problems. A sex toy in the drawer is definitely justified. Regular masturbation helps, among other things:

  1. Vaginal dryness: The skin in the vagina becomes thinner and less moist with menopause, which can feel very uncomfortable. Regular orgasms counteract this and can reduce symptoms such as burning or itching.
  2. Pelvic floor and bladder weakness: Masturbation and penetration strengthen the pelvic floor and help maintain or regain control of the bladder.
  3. Narrowing of the vagina: Regular penetration can help maintain elasticity.
  4. upsets: Orgasms reduce stress and increase well-being by releasing the hormone oxytocin and the neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine.
  5. Sleep disorders: An orgasm causes melatonin to be released so that we fall asleep better afterwards.
  6. Problems with the cardiovascular system: Studies have shown that orgasms can lower blood pressure, prevent cardiovascular diseases and relieve headaches.

This is important to take into account

  1. Moisture against pain: The changed physical conditions should still be taken into account when using a sex toy. Lubricants initially help with vaginal dryness, but above all also prescription medicines (creams containing estrogen or vaginal suppositories). Gynecologists can advise on this. Women don’t just have to endure and endure this.
  2. Prevent infections: During menopause and especially after menopause, estrogen levels decrease, causing the pH in the vagina to rise slightly. And because the skin and mucous membranes in the genital area not only become drier during menopause, but also thinner and more sensitive, this promotes infections. Thorough cleaning of the sexy toys is therefore a must in order to avoid nasty diseases.

Convinced?

Nowadays no one has to go to a sex shop to get a sex toy. Simply order online and have it discreetly sent to your home. The arguments speak for themselves, right? And both Harper and others of her colleagues have even gone so far as to predict that orgasms may eventually even be “prescribed” by doctors as the drug of choice. The arguments speak for it.
