Good news for OPPO fans! A recent agreement concluded with Nokia could allow the brand to return to France.

Last July, the ax fell, OPPO withdrew from the French market. In the context of a trial between OPPO and Nokia, on a case of patent infringement linked to 5G, the fate of Yang Technology, then distributor of the OPPO brand in France, seemed to have been sealed. A very sad situation, and particularly in the field of folding smartphones, where OPPO amazed us a few months ago with its friendly Find N2 Flip. However, a recent agreement suggests a return of the Oppo brand to us.

OPPO reconciles with Nokia

Indeed, while a battle over cellular patents held by Nokia forced OPPO to withdraw from certain European markets, the brand seems to be able to make its comeback. This thanks to the signing of a recent agreement with the giant Nokia.

We are pleased to have entered into this comprehensive patent cross-licensing agreement with Nokia, which includes cross-licensing for 5G standard-essential patents », Said Bingo Liu, CEO of OnePlus Europe, whose brand belongs, like Oppo, to BBK.

OPPO soon back in France?

In other words, from a strict legal point of view, nothing now stands in the way of the return of the OPPO brand to our country. As part of the agreement reached with Nokia, OPPO undertakes to pay royalties, as well as catch-up payments to cover periods of non-payment.

However, relaunching the OPPO brand in France will require significant investments, starting with a new distributor, failing which the Japanese brand can create its own subsidiary here. It remains to be seen whether the Chinese group will see an interest (or not) in relaunching in France.

Beyond its departure from certain European markets, the brand had a complicated year in 2023, with OPPO’s market share having approached 10% in 2022, falling to 8.8% last year. To be continued.

OPPO Find N2 Flip

  • Overall performance
  • Screen quality
  • Hardly noticeable bend in the slab

OPPO’s first European foray into the field of folding smartphones, the Find N2 Flip is a success in many respects. We particularly appreciate its design and ergonomics, which are very effective, even if they are very “inspired” by what Samsung produces.

The hinge mechanism developed by OPPO helps minimize the impact of folding on the AMOLED panel. This also produces a very beautiful image. The external screen, just as good, benefits from generous dimensions. It’s a shame that it is currently under-exploited.

We particularly liked the overall performance, comfortable battery life, ultra-fast charging and photo quality in good brightness. It’s a shame, however, that its price is so high, even if it remains more affordable than its competitors.
