Bad news for Amazon Prime Video subscribers, Amazon’s on-demand streaming service will soon see its prices increase on its ad-free offers, at least for certain users.
Currently, Amazon Prime Video is known for its ad-free experience, with the only ads being short promotional clips for its own shows that play just before a program begins. These classified ads, which typically last between 10 and 30 seconds, are currently included in Prime Video’s free feature.
However, this situation is set to change: viewers will soon have to pay $3 more per month to watch their favorite shows and movies without interruption. This price adjustment will affect both Prime subscribers and those who subscribe exclusively to Prime Video.
Amazon will increase prices for those who don’t want ads
In essence, there will be no escaping the cost if you want to enjoy an ad-free streaming experience. For Amazon Prime members, this means their monthly subscription will increase by $3 unless they opt for the ad-free plan. Likewise, if you are only subscribed to Prime Videowithout Amazon’s classic Prime subscription, your monthly subscription will increase from $8.99 to $11.99.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy announced that this change is expected to take effect in 2024. The exact date has not yet been communicated, but it is expected to be implemented within the first months of the year. Jassy said Prime Video aims to have “ significantly fewer ads than linear TV or other streaming TV providers », without further details.
The introduction of an ad-free paid option is part of an industry trend where streaming services are offering a differentiated approach to cater to diverse preferences.
