Trump is caught in the crossfire of vaccination opponents
As soon as he reported about his booster vaccination at an event, ex-President Trump was booed by some of his supporters. When he spoke about the effectiveness of the vaccination in an interview with a right-wing activist, the reaction was not long in coming.
Former US President Donald Trump is in the crossfire of vaccination opponents after positive statements about the corona vaccination. Right-wing activist Candace Owens said that she believed that Trump was simply old and ill-informed. 75-year-old Trump gave an interview to Owens, who is a supporter of the former president, last week.
“The vaccines are working,” he said in it. “People don’t die when they get vaccinated.” Trump also spoke out again against compulsory vaccination. Trump had previously stated at an event that he had received a booster vaccination and was booed for it by some supporters. As a result, even US President Joe Biden referred to Trump’s vaccination and said the booster was “perhaps one of the few things he and I agree on.”
Trump never explicitly spoke out against the vaccination, but always downplayed the threat posed by the virus. A negative attitude is particularly widespread among Republicans, the Trump party.
After her interview with Trump, Owens tried to defend him – albeit in a rather unusual way. “I don’t think Trump is on the Internet or that he necessarily uses the Internet,” she said. You assume that he only informs himself about so-called mainstream media. “I just wanted to say this because so many donors who support him are wondering where all this is coming from, and I think he really believes it.” The conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, head of the portal “Infowars”, declared that Trump was either “ignorant” or “the most vicious person who has ever lived” because he was forcing this “poison” on people.
“I’m glad (…) Trump is now talking about why it is important to get vaccinated,” responded US immunologist Anthony Fauci. The fact that Trump now has to take so much criticism from his supporters also shows how early he “poisoned the well” when it came to vaccination and “how strong the division is in our society,” said the Biden advisor.
