After the Freebox Ultra, another Freebox is expected in 2024

2024 began for Free with the presentation of the Freebox Ultra and the relaunch of the Freebox Revolution. The year could continue with the update of the Freebox Pop.

Free perhaps did not show all its cards on January 30, during the presentation of its new Freebox Ultra. As Frandroid noted on February 2, an additional Freebox could be presented later in the year. Our colleague relies on the findings from an Internet user, Tiino-X83, who closely follows the operator’s news.

Tiino-X83 recovered PDF documents which are user guides. They concern several devices from the Internet service provider (Freebox Ultra Server, Wi-Fi 7 repeater, pocket Wi-Fi, but also the Freebox Pop Server and Player). However, upon reading, it appears that a hardware revision is planned for the Freebox Pop.

A Freebox Pop with Wi-Fi 7

This new Freebox Pop 2024 edition would therefore succeed the Freebox Pop of 2020. Among its characteristics, it is a question of a wall mounting system, an on/off button, and above all the presence of Wi-Fi 7, the new generation of Wi-Fi. With one caveat, however: the third frequency band (6 GHz) would not be managed.

The Freebox Pop of 2020 was nicknamed the Freebox v8 (the Freebox Ultra having received the code name Freebox v9). An update of Pop would not be absurd, four years after its release. This is all the more true since the operator has made the decision to relaunch its Freebox Revolution offer, which dates from 2010.

We still have to wait and see if this modernized Freebox Pop will indeed be released in 2024, or later. Free will undoubtedly procrastinate on the subject, in order to give priority to the Freebox Ultra. After all, the offer that accompanies the box constitutes Free’s spearhead against its rivals, with a myriad of associated services.

At the beginning of February, the official Free website still references the “classic” Freebox Pop, with Wi-Fi 6. A generation presented as capable of delivering speeds up to twice as fast as Wi-Fi 5, more of 1 Gbit/s, and better manage multiple network connections. Of course, Wi-Fi 7 intends to do even better than 6.

In the meantime, Free is focusing on the Freebox Ultra on its website. Internet users who would like to take the plunge and subscribe must, however, find out the details of the formula so as not to have any surprises (streaming offers come with advertising) or to not miss out on particular options.
