Against Leksand – 1: 8! KAC with debacle in Champions Hockey League

The KAC was eliminated on Tuesday in the Champion Hockey League (CHL) despite a 4-0 cushion from the home game in the round of 16. Austria’s record ice hockey champions were defeated by the Swedish top club Leksands IF in the second leg 1: 8 (0: 3.0: 2.1: 3), which meant that the actual favorite was ahead of the overall score with 8: 5. On Wednesday, Salzburg tried to make up a 3-0 deficit at home against the French team Rouen Dragons.

Leksand started like a raid, after just 94 seconds Isak Rosen started the race to catch up with a shot into the Kreuzeck, more or less unrestricted after a solo. A good eight minutes later, the 18-year-old was outnumbered by 2-0. And KAC goalie Sebastian Dahm also had to accept the opponent’s third goal, while Emil Heinemann scored (13th). The game seemed to be heading towards an early decision, but the question of promotion remained open until two minutes before the end, because in the middle third Leksand put in a power play again through Martin Karlsson (33rd) and ex-Graz defender Matt Caito even in a 5th : 3 outnumbered game (37th), but in the final third Lukas Haudum scored the KAC goal after assisting Thomas Hundertpfund. At 1: 5, the match would have gone into overtime. After the second Heinemann goal (50th) there was still hope among the Carinthians, but not after the final double strike by Heinemann (59th) and Carter Camper (60th). The Klagenfurters had Jakob Holzer, Kele Steffler, Paul Postma, Nick Petersen, Dennis Sticha, Johannes Bischofberger, Samuel Witting, Matt Fraser, Maximilian Theirich, Jannik Fröwis and Andrej Tavzelj have to play eleven players. Weak replacement, the “red jackets” received too many penalties in their pursuit of their first CHL quarter-finals. In the outnumbered game, the four-time Swedish champions, who had faltered in their previous games, took advantage of their class ice cold. The round of 16 match between Finnish team Lukko Rauma and HCB Südtirol, which was scheduled for Wednesday, has been canceled by the Finnish authorities as a medical precaution because some players from Lukko Rauma are not available due to the Covid-19 protocol. The CHL will decide on how to proceed at a later point in time. Result of the CHL round of 16 – second leg: Leksands IF – KAC 8: 1 (3: 0.2: 0.3: 1). Goals: Heinemann (13th, 50th, 59th), Rosen (2nd, 9th), Karlsson (33rd), Caito (37th), Carter (60th) and Haudum (47th). First leg 0: 4. KAC eliminated with a total score of 5: 8.
