While the price of electricity continues to rise at home, it falls for electric cars in the Ionity network. From there to seeing it as an incentive to leave your home to live in your vehicle…
In case you missed the information, the government has announced an increase in the price of electricity in France from February 1st. Bruno LeMaire has in fact announced an increase of between 8.6% and 9.8%, the first applying to the base rate, the second to peak/off-peak rates. For its part, Ionity, the largest charging network in Europe, will reduce the bill; not that of the kWh on the terminals, which was already operated a few months ago, but on the amount of its monthly Passport subscription.
Ionity halves the price of its Passport subscription
Unsurprisingly, electric vehicles have never sold as well as in 2023 in France; you still need to recharge them. One of the players in this market is Ionity. It is a consortium, founded in 2016 by Audi, BMW, Ford, Mercedes and Porsche, which opened its first stations in 2017.
In August, users of the Ionity network were already able to benefit from a reduction in the price of kWh: it went from 69 cents to 59 cents without a Passport subscription, and from 49 cents to 39 cents with it.
This subscription, available throughout Europe, therefore allows you to benefit from a reduction of 20 euro cents per kilowatt hour. Until now, the company charged 11.99 euros per month for it. It was therefore profitable to subscribe to it from consumption above 60 kWh.
In a press release published today, the group formalized a reduction in the monthly subscription cost: it now drops to 5.99 euros. This bill divided by two makes the formula interesting from 30 kWh. The subscription can be canceled with one month’s notice.
Very competitive prices
These successive reductions make the Ionity network, which currently includes 600 stations and 3,300 terminals in Europe, one of the most attractive. It should also be noted that on the wholesale market, the price of electricity has fallen sharply in recent months.
In any case, to take a competing network like that of the Dutch Fastned, the kWh also costs 59 cents in France, but the subscription, called Gold Member, still costs 11.99 euros. With its 25% discount on the standard rate, which therefore increases the kWh to 0.44 euros (evening 15 cents less), it is only relevant from “a monthly consumption of 50 kWh or more » according to the brand, more like 80 kWh if we trust the mathematics. Well, let’s be fair: the statement applies to all countries, and the discount can amount to 30% on a kWh rate of 0.69 cents in certain places.
Finally, an operator like IEcharge displays the most competitive standard rate on the market (€0.30/kWh), but has a very limited network of stations at the moment. Additionally, we omit other features like power here.
For completeness, please note that Ionity is also reducing its prices per kWh in Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Austria. The press release does not provide information on the price and refers to the website. However, as you will see above, prices have not yet been updated at the time of writing.
