Ahsoka: who is Sabine Wren in Star Wars?

Natasha Liu Bordizzo is Sabine Wren in the new Star Wars series, Ahsoka, on Disney+. This heroine has already been seen in the animated series Rebels. Here is what you need to know about his personal history.

Although the new series Ahsoka is dedicated to the fascinating heroine who bears this name, with Rosario Dawson in the title role, the focus is almost as much on another character: Sabrine Wren, played by Natasha Liu Bordizzo. Although the first two episodes already available on Disney+ gradually introduce her role and her mentor-protege relationship with Ahsoka, here is what you need to know about this important protagonist with colored hair.

The Mandalorian turned rebel

The character is not new. Sabine’s very first appearance dates back to 2014, in star wars rebels, the animated series. It was Tiya Sircar who did her voice in VO, and Mélanie Dambermont in VF. It is then a Mandalorian, who breaks the codes in these fighters: far from the greyish combination and the taciturn air of most of them, she bets on a certain aesthetic, between her colored hair and her passion for graffiti, which allows him to express himself. She is also vivacious in the verb and unruly by nature – which is evident in the live-action series (in live action).

But Sabine’s story is not that happy, because the heroine is also in search of redemption. Initially, it was backed by the Empire. At the Imperial Academy of Mandalore, she had put her creativity to use in the development of weapons. It was, as we know, a regimentation: Sabine was convinced that helping the Empire was the best thing to do for the galaxy and for her people. But, when she discovered that these weapons she was contributing to were ultimately used to oppress the people of the Mandalorians, she quickly realized that she had to stand up against the Empire instead. Thus, she joined the rebels, with a certain passion.

It was there that she met the famous Ezra Bridger, a well-known rebel, regularly mentioned in Ahsoka like a haunting ghost — Ezra “disappeared” at the end of star wars rebels along with Admiral Thrawn. Together, they formed the crew of the Ghost, aboard which we also found Kanan, Zeb and… Hera, also very present in Ahsoka, where she is played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead. (Note that, in episode 2, you can see a fresco of the entire Ghost crew, a graffiti probably made by Sabine herself, in reference to her passion for mural painting.)

All of these events took place just before A New Hope (episode IV). The sequel, to know what happens during the IV-V-VI trilogy and before the series Ahsoka, is tragic for Sabine. While she was protecting the planet Lothal, along with the rebellion, the “Great Purge of Mandalore” took place. Because of the Empire, the character therefore lost his world and, quite possibly, his entire family.

Is Sabine Wren a Jedi?

At the start of the new series, it will not have escaped your notice that Sabine Wren wields the lightsaber (green!) and that Ahsoka Tano is described as her “master”, her mentor. This touches on events that took place between the end of star wars rebels and the first episode ofAhsoka.

This period is not yet exactly known, we must pick up the pieces. It would seem that Sabine was trained for a long time by Ashoka. Before the relationship broke up. The series does not cease to evoke the complicated relationship between them, but episode 2 resolders their links: Sabine once again joins her mentor in search of Admiral Thrawn.

“This idea of learning is the central theme of the series”

Jon Favreau

An important question remains unanswered: its relationship to the Force. Sabine seems to be able to be qualified as a “Jedi”, or to come close to it, even if her power remains very moderate, as shown by the end of the first episode. The rest of the series will probably put her to the test as to this role, the abilities and duties it confers. Ahsoka Tano will have to complete her training, which was interrupted previously.

This role of teacher taken on by the central heroine is even the driving theme of the new series. ” This idea of learning is the central theme of the series, and it is what concerns Ahsoka when she is faced with Sabine. », indicates Jon Favreau, producer ofAhsoka, in the production notes. The transmission of knowledge is the common thread. ” She has this inherent need to pass on her knowledge and help save the galaxy. »
