AI better than doctors according to patients in an experiment conducted by Google

A study conducted by Google on the application of AI to the medical sector shows promising results. Technology may even be able to surpass humans in certain activities.

And given the results of a new study which has just been produced using a Google language model, it seems that the future in hospitals lies with AI!

With the emergence of AI in 2023, this technology has been tested in many fields, including the medical sector.

But the latest study which has just been pre-published by a team of researchers is a first, because, “ this is the first time that a conversational AI system has been optimally designed for diagnostic dialogue and consideration of clinical history » according to one of the co-authors, Alan Karthikesalingam, researcher at Google Health.

Called AMIE, for Articulate Medical Intelligence Explorer, it is powered by a language model from Google, and was created to be able to inquire about the medical history of patients in order to then establish a diagnosis. An important part of the work of a doctor, currently not very present in medical AI.

AI would be better in interactions with patients

And the first tests were particularly conclusive. The study thus reports trials during which 20 actors were asked to simulate a total of 149 cases, while AMIE and 20 doctors were responsible for clarifying these same cases. In the end, the AI ​​was better than the doctors in 24 of the 26 criteria put in place to judge the quality of the medical exchange.

AMIE also performed better than humans in the six medical specialties examined. Promising results, even if the researchers do not want to get ahead of themselves. The study “ in no way means that a linguistic model is better than doctors in establishing clinical history » Alan Karthikesalingam insisted on this idea.
