Engaged in a media and information education process, the MJC Louise-Michel carried out a first “Des-Infox” action for a few days.
“Young people no longer get information in the same way as adults, they get information on social networks, Tiktok and Instagram, it’s the door open to everything. We must help them to sharpen their critical spirit, to have a new state of mind to check the information and not fall into traps and manipulations, ”summarizes Gaëlle Foray, assistant for associative and cultural life at the MJC Ambarroise. She was specially trained in a new tool created by the MJC confederation of France.
“I learned that you have to be careful with the sources”
For a few days, the Ambar structure had this “trunk”. Inside ? Many playful and effective media to highlight, through scientific, historical, journalistic, linguistic approaches, etc., the relationships between information, sources, ways of communicating it and the ways in which it is received.
Practical exercises during a session open to all on Saturday morning. Gaëlle Foray provides amazing information, others quite plausible. Likely or unlikely? Important news for me or not? “When we receive information, the question of probable or improbable immediately arises and our desire to find out if it is true or not, depends on the importance that this information takes for us”, underlines- she. Participants unraveled claims made by rumor, by testimonials from relatives, experts and scientific studies.
“Pay attention to the sources”
In texts, they detected figures of speech and the intended effects. “I learned that you have to be careful with the sources”, summed up Louise, 12 years old. “We can also peddle incorrect information on a daily basis, there, it makes it possible to realize it”, commented Evelyne, 66 years old.
Four classes of 3and of the Sainte-Marie college had the chance to benefit from the operation last week. Sanitary conditions and delays prevented the participation of classes from the Saint-Exupéry college and reduced other groups. The “trunk” goes back to other structures but the MJC Ambarros intends to renew this action.
