(Boursier.com) — A reversal welcomed by KLM. Under pressure from the European Commission, the United States and Canada, the Dutch government has suspended its bill to reduce the number of annual flights at Schiphol by around 10% in order to reduce noise and environmental pollution. A measure which would have had a strong impact on KLM. The government told parliament it had received a letter from Brussels stating that the body “expressly reserves the right to initiate infringement proceedings against the Netherlands”, according to Transport Minister Mark Harbers. The EC considers that the Netherlands does not comply with European regulations, according to Mr. Harbers.

KLM said it was satisfied that the Dutch government had decided to suspend the experimental rule for next year. This is an important step to avoid retaliation and continue serving the United States. For the Batavian company, the European Commission has sent a clear signal in favor of a careful legal procedure, following a balanced approach.
