Air: manufacturers ask the EU for more support for the development of sustainable fuels

(AOF) – The European aeronautical industry “welcomes” the inclusion by the European Commission of SAF (sustainable aviation fuels) as a strategic technology in the text on the decarbonization of the industry (NZIA for Net Zero Industry Act) . She sees this as a precondition for paving the way for the development of a strong and globally competitive European SAF market, itself crucial for achieving the EU’s climate ambitions by 2040.

They call on EU policymakers to go further to ensure that Europe develops a leading SAF industry. This would involve giving the aviation sector priority access to raw materials and putting in place incentives to reduce the price gap between SAF and conventional kerosene.

Industrialists are calling in particular for the extension of the SAF flexibility mechanism beyond 2034, the extension of the current threshold of 20 million for financial incentives and the postponement of the 2030 deadline for this mechanism, as well as financial support increased the development of SAF, in particular through the Innovation Fund, and the simplification of the administrative procedure for access to these funds.

This call is signed by the five main European aviation associations representing airlines, airports, the civil aviation industry and air navigation service providers, united within the “Destination 2050” alliance.
