The Republicans have failed in the House of Representatives to initiate impeachment proceedings against US Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas. A few Republicans refused to vote for it. Due to the narrow Republican majority, the vote ended with 216 votes to 214 against the motion. Before that it was 215 votes to 215 for minutes.

Republicans accused Mayorkas of “knowingly making false statements” when he said in a hearing that the government had everything under control at the border. In addition, Mayorkas is said to have “placed his political preferences above compliance with the law,” as Republican committee chairman Mark E. Green said.
Impeachment proceedings are not completely off the table
Impeachment was considered unlikely regardless of today’s vote. After the House of Representatives, the Senate, with a two-thirds majority, would also have had to vote for impeachment. However, there are more Democrats in the Senate than Republicans. Many Democrats saw the attempted impeachment as an election maneuver given the hopelessness.
Despite the difficult path to possible impeachment, the spokesman for the Republican chairman of the chamber announced after the vote that he would put forward the motion again. This is after the necessary majority has been secured.
